The Vandana and Tisarana are ancient chants in the Pali language that are usually performed at the start of a Buddha service to signify taking refuge in the Tripple Gem of the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha. However, in Shin/Pure Land Buddhism when we say 'namuamidabutsu' we are at the same time saying "I take refuge in Amida Buddha", and so other forms of refuge or devotional affirmation are not strictly necessary.
